Wedding Planning Timeline by Month
A twelve-month wedding planning timeline keeps the big decisions early and the last month quiet. Every wedding is different — treat the months below as a steady rhythm, not a rulebook, and adjust to your own pace.
12 months before
Set the foundations
- Talk about the shape of the day you both want: big or small, formal or relaxed, hometown or destination.
- Agree on a rough budget and who is contributing to what.
- Start a first guest list — it drives venue size and catering cost more than anything else.
- Research and book your venue; popular dates go early.
9–11 months before
Book the big three
- Reserve your caterer, photographer, and entertainment — their calendars fill first.
- Start looking at attire so alterations have plenty of runway.
- Set up a shared place to keep contracts and receipts (a folder or our budget sheet).
6–8 months before
Fill in the picture
- Send save-the-dates, especially for destination or holiday-weekend weddings.
- Book flowers, decor, transport, and an officiant if you have not yet.
- Order invitations and plan a menu tasting.
4–5 months before
Tighten the list
- Move the guest list from “maybe” to “yes or no”.
- Buy rings and book the rehearsal dinner spot.
- Schedule attire fittings and plan any honeymoon travel.
2–3 months before
Paperwork and final bookings
- Send invitations and start tracking RSVPs.
- Check the marriage license rules where you are getting married — requirements and waiting periods vary.
- Confirm the payment schedule with each vendor; order the cake.
1 month before
Final counts
- Give the caterer a final headcount and seat the reception tables.
- Confirm arrival times with every vendor in writing.
- Write your vows and pick a helper to handle decor logistics on the day.
Final week
Only details
- Collect what you need for the marriage license and pack a day-of emergency kit.
- Hand envelopes and decor boxes to your helpers.
- Sleep. The plan is on paper — let it work for you.
